Measuring for solar shading should be a breeze. That’s why we’ve created a simple guide for you to follow.
This guide applies to measuring for all classic indoor solutions including pleated blinds, duo, Venetian blinds and roller blinds.
This is what you need to clarify
How should your screen be positioned?
One consideration is ceiling or wall mounting, here we’re talking about whether the location is inside the window frame or outside/in front of the window and possibly the sill.
Here’s what you need
To help you with your goals, you’ll need:
- A metal tape measure (sturdy and preferably with a locking mechanism)
- Pencil
- Paper
All your measurements must be in centimeters and also to the nearest 0.1 cm.
Our fabric experts recommend that when ordering a blackout blind, you install it outside the window recess with the exact blind measurements. This ensures it blocks as much external light as possible. Just follow the measurement instructions below and we’ll take it from there!
When your solar shading needs to fit in a window recess
Choose this option when you want your blind to fit into the window recess
Depression width
Take 3 measurements for the width of the window recess as shown in the image.
Take the smallest of these measurements. This is your indentation width.
We will make the necessary deductions for mechanisms, fittings and clearance to ensure the blind will work in the window recess.
Note: The fabric itself will be approximately 3-4 cm narrower than the width of the recess, depending on the blind ordered.
See the fabric dimensions chart below.
Recess Drop
Take 3 measurements for the fall of the window recess as shown in the image.
Take the smallest of these measurements. This is your immersion.

PRECISE BLIND MEASUREMENT
Select this option when you want your curtain to fit outside the window recess.
Precise blind width (also known as pin width or finished blind width)
Decide how much you want to overlap the recess on each side. We recommend at least 7.5 cm each side to minimize as much external light as possible.
Take the total width measurement including the overlap. This is the exact blind width.
Note: This width includes the blind mechanism and is not the width of the fabric. See the fabric dimensions chart below.
Precise Blind Drop
Decide how much you want to overlap the recess at the top and bottom. We recommend at least 7.5 cm at the top if the blind is to be rolled up completely over the window recess.
Take the total drop measurement including the overlap. This is your exact blind drop.
